Operational Notes:

  • Displayed at 2019 parade on a transporter that indicates it is carried under the belly of the H-6N bomber.
  • Designed for rapid, deep-penetration reconnaissance of heavily defended areas (carrier battle groups, Pacific island bases).
  • Concept of operations likely similar to Cold War-era Lockheed D-21 drone.
  • Liquid rocket propulsion makes this a high-speed dash vehicle, not a loitering platform.
  • Some analysts assess it may serve a secondary strike role, but no weapons integration is confirmed.

EOD Relevance -- CRITICAL:

  • LIQUID ROCKET PROPELLANT: Likely uses hypergolic or volatile liquid propellants (UDMH/NTO or similar). These are EXTREMELY toxic. Treat any crashed WZ-8 as a HAZMAT incident first.
  • High-speed impact: If it crashes, the kinetic energy at Mach 3-5 will cause catastrophic destruction; debris will be small fragments spread over a wide area.
  • Exotic materials: Likely uses titanium, ceramics, and ablative heat-shielding materials.
  • Rocket motor: Even expended motors may contain residual propellant -- approach with extreme caution.
  • H-6N pylons: If the mothership crashes, the WZ-8 may be found on its pylon -- treat as a combined aircraft/ordnance incident.

Operational Notes:

  • Widely deployed PLA tactical UAV since 1990s. ASN-206 served as PLA's primary short-range ISR drone for over a decade.
  • ASN-207 is the improved variant with longer endurance and enhanced sensors.
  • Both use rocket-assisted takeoff from rail launchers and parachute recovery.

  • Iraq (2015-2018): Unconfirmed reports of Chinese drone use; Iraq evaluated but likely purchased CH-4B instead.
  • Myanmar (2022-present): Reported transfer to Myanmar military (Tatmadaw); unconfirmed but satellite imagery shows UAS shelters at Myanmar airbases.

EOD Relevance -- CRITICAL (Armed Platform):

  • WEAPONS ON PYLONS: Crashed Wing Loong II may have 1-6 live weapons still attached. BA-7/AR-1/AR-2 missiles have semi-active laser homing seekers and blast-fragmentation warheads. FT-series bombs have GPS/INS fuzes.
  • FUEL: Turboprop uses Jet-A/JP-8 type fuel. Up to 1,000 kg onboard.
  • SIZE: 20.5 m wingspan -- this is a large aircraft. Crash debris field comparable to a light aircraft.
  • SATCOM ANTENNA: Dorsal satellite communications dome (fragile but not explosive).
  • COMPOSITE AIRFRAME: Carbon fiber, fiberglass, Kevlar -- toxic particulates when burned or fragmented.
  • KEY IDENTIFIER: Distinguished from Wing Loong I by larger size, V-tail (similar but larger), 6 pylons vs 2, turboprop vs piston engine.
  • WRECKAGE EXPLOITATION: Wing Loong II wreckage from Libya has been extensively documented. Fuselage serial numbers, Chinese-language markings, and AVIC logos have been photographed on recovered debris.
