Overview
Japan's drone program has historically been limited compared to regional peers, reflecting constitutional constraints and a defense posture focused on manned platforms. However, rapid capability expansion is underway driven by China's military buildup and the lessons of Ukraine. Japan is acquiring US HALE/MALE platforms (Global Hawk, MQ-9B), investing in Kawasaki programs, and pursuing ATLA (Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency) R&D in autonomous systems, counter-drone technology, and loitering munitions.
