Factors affecting penetration: Impact angle, velocity, soil moisture, soil type (clay vs sand), warhead nose shape, casing hardness.

Common Dud Indicators

  • Visible bomb body protruding from ground (partial burial)
  • Crater without fragmentation evidence (low-order or dud)
  • Intact fuze arming wire/pin still attached
  • Visible fins/stabilizer above ground level
  • UMPK/guidance kit debris near impact site (Russian glide bombs)
  • Submunition scatter pattern without central crater (cluster munitions)

Universal EOD Approach Rules

  1. NEVER approach until positive identification
  2. Establish exclusion zone based on largest possible NEQ
  3. Check for anti-handling features before any movement
  4. Electronic fuzes (FMU-139, UMPK, JDAM) may have anti-disturbance
  5. Thermobaric duds (ODAB) -- NO ignition sources; fuel vapor hazard
  6. Cluster submunitions -- assume ALL are armed; mark and avoid
  7. Guided bomb duds -- thermal batteries may still be active; electronics hazard
  8. Penetrator duds (BLU-109, BETAB) -- assume deep burial; delayed fuze
