  • UMPK wings are the clearest indicator of glide-kit version

  • Body panels that appear to hinge open
  • If opened: hollow interior visible, submunition retention mechanisms
  • If intact: same diameter as FAB-500 but lighter weight for its size

9. Commonly Confused With

  • FAB-500 M-62: Same ~450 mm diameter; FAB has solid body without split seam; heavier
  • Check for seam line on body; read subtype designation in stenciling

10. CRITICAL EOD WARNINGS

  • FAILED DISPENSER = EXTREME HAZARD: Contains dozens to hundreds of individual armed submunitions in a single body
  • ANY disturbance could trigger dispenser mechanism release or individual submunition detonation
  • If dispenser FUNCTIONED: search surrounding 300 x 150 m area for dud submunitions before approaching casing
  • Dud rates of 10-30% for individual submunitions -- expect significant numbers of UXO on ground

UMPK Glide Kit Identification Guide

The UMPK (Unified Planning and Correction Module) converts unguided FAB bombs into standoff guided glide weapons. It is the single most impactful Russian ordnance development in the Ukraine conflict.

Visual Features of UMPK Kit

  • Pop-out swept wings bolted to bomb body at mid-section (~1.5 m estimated span)
